ABOUT THE TITLE
This book is intended for use by all healthcare professionals involved in newborn care working at various levels both in public and private sector. It follows a distinctive pattern of delivering practical information. It comprises three sections including chapters related to departmental organization and routines followed from admission to discharge, problem-based protocols that are developed after extensive literature review and some important neonatal procedures. It is not designed to give guidelines for treatment of a ‘diagnosis/condition’ or impart ‘knowledge’ about that particular diagnosis but presents stepwise approach to management of ‘problems’ associated with it. Algorithms have been provided to make the stepwise approach easier to follow. As an example, the book will not guide how to treat ‘pneumonia’ but would focus on the treatment of clinical problems associated with pneumonia, such as respiratory failure, hyperthermia, hypoglycemia, infection, etc. This book is also expected to help make the neonatal care uniform among different neonatal units.

Brief Introduction of the Editors:
Professor Khawaja Ahmad Irfan Waheed heads the Department of Neonatology at the Children’s Hospital & the Institute of Child Health, Lahore, Pakistan. He did his fellowship in Pediatrics from College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan and fellowship in Neonatology from Royal College of Paediatrics & Child Health, UK. He is a supervisor and examiner of College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan in subjects of Pediatrics and Neonatology, a member of Provincial Technical Working Group on Newborn Care for Government of the Punjab, founder member and Director of Neonatal Life Support course and many other specialized neonatology courses conducted by the Institute of Child Health, Lahore as well as national trainer and country contact for American Academy of Pediatrics for ‘Helping Babies Breathe’ trainings. He has authored many books and served as the technical editor of Essential Newborn Care Reference Manual developed by Government of the Punjab.
Professor Khalid N. Haque is an internationally recognized Neonatologist trained in UK, whose career spans nearly 50 years of working, teaching and training in the UK, North America, Middle East and Pakistan. He has extensive experience teaching and training clinicians, nurses and students in numerous countries in Asia, Africa and South America. He has been training and teaching doctors, nurses and medical students in Pakistan for the past 30 years.
